Coaching with Shalini helped me immensely in navigating the world after the loss of my beloved dog. It was so helpful to talk to someone who truly understands this kind of loss. She was patient and kind and gave me tools that aligned with my lifestyle. She catered her advice to me, personally, rather than a one size fits all check list approach. I am grateful to have found her as a resource and will refer others who may have to deal with this in the future.

Therapy can address mental health conditions, trauma, and broader psychological concerns. While a lot of these aspects come up as I talk to clients, my coaching is centered on helping you learn how to live alongside your grief. In general, therapy deals with past occurrences and how they shape you as a human being. I take that into consideration when we talk about your personal coping ways, and how you are impacted by your grief, and I focus on your present and your future self.
If you need clinical mental health support, I'll encourage you to continue your work with a licensed mental health professional, while you work with me, because each of these has their own specific place in your well-being, your success, your happiness and how you show up for yourself and others.
My work is laser-focused on pet loss. We're not talking about grief in the abstract or applying a general framework to your experience. We work specifically with the unique realities of pet loss: disenfranchised grief, guilt around euthanasia and medical decisions, identity loss, disrupted routines, anticipatory grief, continuing bonds, and the complex, layered, relationship you have with your animal companion.
There is no threshold you have to reach. If your pet's loss is affecting your daily life, identity, relationships, or ability to feel like yourself, you deserve support.
That's okay. You don't need to arrive with your grief neatly organized or know exactly what you want to work on. You bring what you're experiencing. I'll help us identify what's underneath it and where our work can be most useful.
You can still be grieving. Pet loss has no expiration date, and we can work with a loss from weeks, months, or years ago. I have had clients come to me at different points in their loss and left empowered, and transformed, or chosen to continue with me as their transformative coach.
We can work with anticipatory grief too. If your pet is aging, seriously ill, or nearing the end of their life, you don't have to navigate the fear, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion alone. I have lived through exactly this with my Kahlua boy and will absolutely work with you through this difficult phase with your beloved baby.
No. The depth of your grief isn't determined by species. Whether you lost a dog, cat, horse, bird, rabbit, or another beloved companion, this space is for you.
Our work is structured around where you are and what you need. We'll work through the emotions and experiences that are keeping you stuck, while building practical ways to understand and carry your grief. I look at all the ways in which your grief is impacting you — your work, your physical health, your emotional and mental well being, your marriage or relationship, family, friends, and hobbies, because it does affect everything. It affects you spiritually too, and it impacts your routines and structure. Many people feel a loss of purpose and joy. I take a close look at your personal impacts and work with you to gently rebuild your new normal. But we never forget your angel pet. They are always at the center of our work. Rebuilding never means forgetting.
The goal isn't to become grief-free. We are never grief-free. But we are transformed. The goal is to understand your grief so it no longer dictates every part of your life, or brings you to your knees while doing simple tasks, while finding a way to carry your pet's memory and love forward.
No. We work toward moving with your grief, not leaving your pet behind. Your relationship with your pet doesn't end because their life did. I am a living example of this. Kahlua is in everything I do, and I have integrated him into a life where he isn't physically here anymore. And I have done it with joy and purpose. As have my clients. And you will too.
No. Being heard matters, but that's only part of the work. You'll have compassionate support and structure, reflection, and practical tools to help you work with your grief between sessions.
Real Results
My grief was debilitating. I was living my life through a fog, every mention of her or any pet passing away reduced me to a complete mess. And I wasn't getting better. I doom scrolled Instagram surfing pet grief accounts and posting memes about being in so much pain. We adopted two adorable puppies and I lived in absolute dread of something happening to them. I couldn't bond like I wanted to. I could not look back at the 6 years I had with my baby, Rogue and feel anything but raging anger and despair. Crying every single day.
I want to say that now, I cannot believe the difference in my outlook. How much I've been able to work through. Literally and mentally. The difference in my relationship with my puppies. The despair is gone. And the work I've been able to do in a space where someone understands. Being safe with a coach that gets my grief and how important she still is to me is so pivotal. I'm continuing my coaching because I need it and my life is better because of the work I am doing. I do not cry every day anymore.
If you are considering this enough to look for it, you need it. Do not be like me and try to white-knuckle your way through. It won't work and it feels so awful. You deserve more than "it was just a dog." Give that to yourself. Work with a professional that helps you look forward and not just rehashing backwards. My baby saved our lives through something dark and painful. Then she was gone. That grief is real and valid and if you feel that way your feelings are real and valid. If this happened to you and you are changed by that it's absolutely good to want to work through it. I chose Shalini and I am grateful for that.

My grief felt crippling, I didn't care about anything, I was reliving our last days constantly. These days, the grief still hits but I feel like our sessions have helped immensely to weather when it comes. I'm also better able to process each time the grief hits because you've helped me remember how it feels to be safe enough to do that.
Grief can be very lonely, isolating, even ostracising, especially when it feels like you're the only witness left from the bond you share with your soul dog. You gave me the space and you bear witness to how significant Lilo's presence is. I will always be grateful for all this.
It's difficult to find someone who genuinely understands this specific path of choosing an animal for family.

About Me
I'm a Pet Loss Grief Coach, author, and founder of Letters to my Soul Dog. I help pet parents navigate the devastating loss of a beloved animal and build a life that can hold both their grief and their joy.
My work began with Kahlua, my soul dog. I rescued him at three months old and loved him for more than 13 years. Losing him changed my life and showed me just how little meaningful support exists for people grieving a pet.
So I built the kind of support I wish had existed for me.
Today, I coach pet parents through the guilt, regret, identity loss, loneliness, and overwhelming grief that can follow pet loss. My approach is grounded in compassion, practical tools, and the belief that you don't have to move on from your pet to move forward with your life.
I wrote Letters to My Soul Dog to put words to this experience. Through my coaching, I help people take the next step: learning to carry their loss without letting it take away their ability to live fully.
